Where does this Haysi team expect to rank among the best in BDD history?

Do you mean this coming year or last years team?

I mean this years team. I know Honaker won the Region D a couple of years in 00 and 01 I think, and Haysi won a couple of region championships in the early 90's...Garden was tough in 86 I think was and Haysi was also strong in 84 and 85. What is the expectations of this Haysi team coming of a pretty good showing last year? Will they be good enough to deserve mention in the same sentence as some of those teams?

I'd say Gate City will rule the Region D for years to come. Haysi will be good this year, but I don't think they or even Honaker, Clintwood, and Powell Valley for that matter will be able to compete against Gate City as long as they are around.

The original post i made was talking strictly about BDD and how this Haysi team would rank against teams of the past who played in that district. Last years Gate City team would handle any team that i can remember playing in the BDD in the past 25 years without alot of problem i think. I dont think that even the Powell Valley teams with Thomas and Julius Jones would have beaten their squad last year. They were among the best in SWVA football history.

Haysi has some big expectations this year. they will be tough without a doubt, but those expectations can bite you...just ask some of the guys from last years Honaker squad. My point being, lets wait untill the season is over before we rank them as being one of the best ever in the BDD.

Last year's team has been compared to the early 90's teams when we should have won state and this years team has the potential to be even better. They could easily be one of the best

Its tough to compare last years Haysi team to the teams they had in the early 90's because they were far to one dimensional on offense. Last years Haysi team had a good defense but will need to improve their passing game greatly on offense to be compared to those teams.

Gate City lost a lot to graduation (18-19 seniors)this past year. They have only one returning starter on offense (an offensive guard) and return 5 or 6 on defense. I think they will be competitive but as of right now they are a long way from contending for the region championship this year. I believe the Haysi/Honaker matchup this season could be just as good if not better than last years brawl. Haysi has a good nucleus returning, I wouldn't count them out of the regional fray myself. Powell Valley (from what I have read on the LPD forum) has already won the LPD & has a place cleaned out in the trophy case for the bling-bling...probably has a place ready for the regional championship trophy as well from what myself & others gathered from that forum. This seems to be what the PV faithful are insinuating. I guess second place is what everyone else will be competing for within that district. Good luck to all of the BDD teams this season, may everyone be kept safe from serious injury.

Anyone who saw the backups for Gate City last year will know they will be very competitive for a regional championship. They may not be the favorite but what they have on defense will make them hard to beat even for PV. They have alot of guys who held back in the 8th grade who are Jr's this year. The Honaker Haysi game should be a good one again but the two teams have switched roles with Haysi being the team who would have a better chance to win the region...but must avoid the upset at Fuller Field.
